Subcutaneous fat lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles. You are able to touch or grasp subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat has several different nicknames usually referred to by men as six-pack, spare-tire, and beer belly. Visceral fat on the other hand is hidden and lies much deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Studies conducted by scientists have shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Although scientists are still studying and conducting research on the affects of excess visceral fat in the abdominal area it is starting to become clear that visceral fat is linked to metabolic disturbances, increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women visceral fat has been linked to breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery.
